What We Cover

BFR Ground Requirements

What your CFI is required to cover during the ground portion of a flight review and how to demonstrate the knowledge standard expected of a certificated pilot.

Current Regulations Review

A focused review of the FARs most relevant to your flying — airspace, currency, equipment requirements, and recent regulatory changes.

Airspace & Chart Reading

Refreshing sectional chart interpretation, airspace classifications, and VFR cruising altitudes — areas that often get rusty between reviews.

Weather Products & ADM

Current weather product usage, go/no-go decision frameworks, and aeronautical decision-making concepts your CFI will discuss.

Emergency Procedures Review

Talking through emergency procedures, abnormal checklists, and how to handle in-flight situations — knowledge your CFI will probe during the review.

IPC Oral Preparation

For instrument-rated pilots, prep for the oral component of an instrument proficiency check — approaches, holds, regulations, and currency requirements.

How a Session Works

01

Identify Your Review Type

We establish whether you need BFR prep, IPC prep, or both — and tailor the session accordingly.

02

Cover Required Ground Topics

Part 91 regulations, airspace, weather, and any specific areas your CFI is likely to probe during the review.

03

Work Through Scenarios

Real-world scenarios and emergency procedures that demonstrate the knowledge your CFI expects.

04

Walk In Prepared

You arrive at your flight review with confident, complete answers for every ground topic your CFI raises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about flight review and IPC preparation.

The FAR requires a review of Part 91 regulations and general operating and flight rules. In practice, most CFIs also cover airspace, weather, and any areas of concern they identify.

One focused 1-hour session is usually sufficient for pilots who have been flying regularly. Pilots who have been less active typically benefit from 2 sessions.

A BFR (now called a flight review) applies to all certificated pilots. An IPC is specific to instrument-rated pilots whose instrument currency has lapsed and must be completed with a CFII.

Yes. If you need both, your instructor can structure sessions to cover the ground requirements for both the flight review and the IPC oral efficiently.

Ground instruction sessions ensure you arrive at your BFR with strong knowledge — reducing the likelihood of extended reviews or follow-up requirements.
